How Senokot Hi-Fibre Works

The following animated diagram demonstrates what happens at each stage of the digestive process when you use Senokot Hi-Fibre. Simply click on the play arrow to reveal the process in order. The stopwatch indicates the length of time each stage takes.

How does Senokot Hi-Fibre work?
(formerly known as Fybogel)

Senokot Hi-Fibre contains ispaghula husk, a natural fibre which can help to ease your digestive flow. No tablets are involved - Senokot Hi-Fibre is conveniently taken as a drink. The fibre adds bulk to the stool, which helps to promote peristalsis - the natural process by which food moves through the digestive system.

Mouth

Food enters the body via the mouth where it is chewed. This action helps to break up the food enabling it to be swallowed and enter the oesophagus / food pipe. The chewing action also releases enzymes which help to break down the food in preparation for the digestion process.

Oesophagus / Food Pipe (Gullet)

The Hi-Fibre drink travels down the oesophagus in the normal way.

Stomach

In the stomach Hi-Fibre forms a soft, consistent mass as the particular type of fibre in Hi-Fibre absorbs more and more water. This then becomes more jelly-like in consistency.

Small Intestine

The Hi-Fibre "gel" travels through the small intestine unabsorbed in the same way you would expect un-digested food to pass through.

Large Intestine (Colon)

As the "gel" travels through the colon it provides an additional soft, bulky mass which can itself help to promote peristalsis and restore bowel regularity. The "gel" can also mix with any hard and dry stools which have accumulated in the colon and rectum and make them softer and easier to pass in the normal way.

Rectum

This is essentially a storage reservoir at the end of the large intestine and adjacent to the anus for accumulating the faeces prior to elimination from the body.

Anus

The opening at the end of the digestive tract which allows waste matter to pass through into the outside world.
